When we’re pregnant or have a new little angel in our life, it’s an important time for us to get to know DHA. DHA is one of the most beneficial omega-3s, polyunsaturated fatty acids that provide many important health benefits. Omega-3s are considered “essential” because our body can’t make them, so we must obtain them through our diet. The best sources of omega-3s are oil-rich fish, such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines.
Health Benefits of DHA During Pregnancy
DHA is passed from mother to infant in placental circulation and provides many important health benefits to both moms and babies. During pregnancy, DHA supports healthy brain function and mood in moms and promotes healthy brain and vision development in growing children. DHA is part of our brain structure, which means it’s literally the stuff brains are made of. DHA is so important during pregnancy, health organizations worldwide recommend at least 200 mg per day for moms – and some suggest triple that dose.
While pregnant, moms who receive enough DHA in their diet can pass it along to their baby. Once the baby is born, DHA can be passed through a mother’s breast milk, is available in certain formulas, and can also be received in liquid supplement form. Carlson Baby’s DHA has a convenient syringe for simple dosing and can be added to a bottle or food. Babies should be given the suggested dose on the label based on the baby’s weight. Carlson Baby’s DHA has been tested by the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) program for purity and potency and receives the highest IFOS rating.
