The arrival of spring means it’s time for a deep, sparkly
cleaning. And we’re not just talking about the surfaces and the floors – we’re
going all in and cleaning everything from the blinds to our closets. If you’re unsure where to
begin, here are some simple ways to get started:
Create a Plan and
Schedule
Developing a schedule is a great place to start. We can do
this by walking through our home, taking notes on the areas that need
attention, writing them down, and tackling one area at a time.
Declutter and
Reorganize
Disorganization can create unneeded stress. Unfortunately,
items collect in closets, cabinets, and drawers. Remove everything from where
it’s being stored, donate or purge unneeded items, and reorganize the area.
This will make you feel renewed – and will eliminate dust.
Clean from Top to
Bottom
Cleaning from the bottom and working our way up can spread
dust back to the areas we’ve already cleaned. It’s best to start at the ceiling
with a vacuum, and eliminate any cobwebs or dust from corners, ceiling fans,
etc. We can then clean the tops of our furniture and work our way down to lower
surfaces and the floor.
Wipe Down Walls and
Windows
We often surface clean and vacuum, but we don’t always think
about our windows, blinds, and walls – which can all collect dust and dirt.
Wipe down walls and blinds with a lightly damp rag. Remove any screens from
windows, hose down the screens, and clean the windows inside and out. We like a
mix of 2 cups of water, ¼ cup of white vinegar, and ½ teaspoon of dish
detergent.
Deep Clean the Air
Giving our home a deep clean also includes replacing furnace
and HVAC filters, which can build up dust over the winter months. We can also
go one step further by getting an air purifier to plug into the main areas we
use such as our bedroom or family room.
